DESCRIPTION

Visual Narratives is a series of self-portraits conceived by Aisha Jemila Daniels with the aim to illustrate the conflicting internal states that negotiate for control within us. Reflecting on her own emotions and experiences, Daniels has projected these states as individuals who interact with one another, demonstrating humility and strength, growth and pain, love and hate, anxiety and confidence. Daniels has incorporated clothing and patterns within each composition that reference her own cultural heritage, which derives from both East and West Africa. Through this series Daniels contemplates who she is, who she wants to be, and where -in between the two - she finds herself at any given moment.
