What’s your definition of a photo studio? Is it a room with a white seamless backdrop or a cyc wall? Maybe it’s simply anywhere you’re in control of the lighting.
In a perfect world, we would all have a 5,000-square-foot studio...and the entire catalog of B&H™ in our equipment lockups. The reality is that you may have an outdated DSLR with two decent lenses, and all you have at your disposal is an unfinished basement, your garage, or the empty conference room at your office. That’s where Studio Anywhere comes in!
Photographer Nick Fancher will be your guide, as you learn how to get portfolio-ready photos while working in some of the most problematic scenarios imaginable. Whether shooting a corporate portrait, a test shoot with a model, or a promo shoot with a band, you’ll discover that most of the time, there’s no need for an expensive studio – you just have to get creative!
Learn how to transform unconventional spaces into polished images, using minimal, affordable gear. The last hour of the workshop is spent covering Nick’s Lightroom workflow so you can learn how to deftly navigate post-processing.
The workshop will cover:
- Window light headshots and hacking reflectors Intro to flash (Manual vs. ETTL, Zoom, Ambient, inverse square law)
- Painting with shadow (length, hardness, and number of shadows)
- Light softening options (soft box, sheet, bounce)
- Light control options (snoot, grid, barn doors, gobo)
- Achieving white, grey, and black backgrounds anywhere
- Adding drama with barn doors (light ray)
- Gobo options (found vs. made— plants, fans, doors, fences, etc)
- Recreating the sun (indoor/outdoor)
- Outdoor ambient options (High speed sync)
- Layering light qualities to highlight textures/features
- Editing in Lightroom
You are a confident user of all the manual shooting modes on your camera for exposure control
You have no previous experience with lighting equipment. You would like to be introduced to basic lighting terms, concepts and equipment.
You would like more opportunities to practise and consolidate what you already know and also to stretch yourself a little further both creatively and technically.
To take part in this workshop, you must have a good understanding of the Adobe Lightroom Classic CC interface and basic tools, as the instructor will not be able to give you personal attention if you are not at the right level for this class. About the Instructor
Nick Fancher
Nick Fancher is a photographer, author, and educator, who specializes in the use of minimal gear in unconventional locations. Though his work ranges wide from commercial and product photography to fine art portraiture and photojournalism, his passion lies in dramatic light and bold color use. He graduated from Ohio State University with a bachelor\'s in fine art photography in 2005.
He currently lives in Columbus, Ohio with his wife and two kids.
