The Red Pill: Uncharted Territories of Personal Narrative Liberation

Level: Photography - Intermediate

"You take the red pill, you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes." - The Matrix

For those photographers who are comfortable with their technique with the camera and looking to challenge themselves conceptually, this workshop is designed to clear any creative blocks and help you dive headfirst into your project. With NOOR photographer Tanya Habjouqa, you and your workshop participants will take your mental process and approach to documentary work into uncharted territories of personal narrative liberation. In other words, you are choosing the red pill.

In this four-day workshop, you will explore the ways you can move beyond a linear narrative and create a "felt experience" for your audience. Tanya’s work digs deeper into the politics of a place as she blends competing narratives, overturning and playing with them, through the use of evidentiary and metaphorical approaches.

The goal of this workshop is to transcend traditional documentary, moving into a new terrain of documentary photography by incorporating the humane, personal, and collaborative into the unexpected. You’ll explore critical theory around issues of representation, community engagement, participatory approaches, and the ethical considerations of using storytelling as a tool for social change. The workshop will focus on awareness and nurturing of personal vulnerability in developing an individual series.

As a portfolio submission is required for this workshop, you will receive a brief portfolio review at the beginning of the workshop, and a consultation focused on a long-term project you’d like to address.

Together with Tanya, you will re-conceptualize, plan, and explore alternative methods of executing documentary projects through discussion and photo critiques. From alternative approaches to research and access, to photographic strategies for storytelling, this workshop will expand your notion of what photography is and give you a profound insight into its transformative powers, as you develop your own personal style.

Notes

Prepare your specific portfolio of a project that you’re currently working on or researching or even an ongoing project you’re troubled with.

You will present it to the group on the first day (you will have 10 minutes incl. introduction). Your images should be formatted, sequenced and ready for viewing on your laptop or put into presentation.

It’s your opportunity to show the project you would like to work on during the masterclass.

You will also want to have all usable images from the project available on your computer or drive in case you want to come back to them when editing.

Think outside the traditional photojournalism! It could be also writing, personal diary, research materials, video, audio or archive footage, material from characters you’re documenting etc.

Additionally, we encourage you to bring other additional projects and work on your hard drive/computer so you have them on hand in case the tutor would like to see it.

In order to make our short time together most rich, please think ahead which questions and points you most want to discuss at this workshop, about your own work and projects, the experience and expertise of Tanya, etc. Imagine how would you like to disseminate the work (as a book, installation, interactive platform etc.).  You will be asked to share the learning points you want to address through this workshop with the group during introductions on the first day.

NOTE ON CLASS TIMINGS
