An Introduction to Artist Books

Level: Open To All
In a world where everything seems to be digital, photography as an object has become even more precious. Putting together different images in a sequence, applying concepts like juxtaposition, repetition or duration, creating a conversation between images and text and exploring the possibilities in materials, media and formats, opens the door for exciting narrative possibilities.

In this half a day seminar you will learn how to create your very own artist books.
We will talk about different formats (including fold outs, concertinas and scrolls), we will examine and demo very simple binding types, we will discuss mixed media techniques that will allow you to alter the page and create original work of art that challenges the structure, idea and content of the book as we know it and experience it.

We will explore traditional and experimental techniques, ranging from very simple projects that you will be able to replicate by yourself using your own photos, to more complex and experimental techniques that… you will be able to replicate by yourself using your own photos, because at the heart of an artist book is the will to create and experiment. The seminar will be complemented by a handout with written instructions.
