Adventures in Expressive Portraiture
Level: Lighting - Confident Beginner
Portrait photography is more than just the sum of technical skills we need to light a subject and making sure he or she fits nicely into the frame. It’s more than finding the right clothes and props, and retouching the skin so that it’s flawless. If everything is perfect, but nothing is happening and the person sitting in front of our camera isn’t engaging… the image just falls flat.
In this intensive 2-day workshop, we’ll talk about rules, only to break them repeatedly.
We will start with little exercises to test the waters and gain confidence. We will explore movement and blur, we will use traditional as well as unconventional lighting, and we will use our cameras in ways that are not described in the manual they came with.
Then we’ll start coming up with a concept and we’ll build a picture one layer at a time, adapting and adjusting to what happens in front of us. The whole time, we will work towards building a connection with our subject, learning how to guide them and direct them.
You will work in groups as well as individually with a model.
We are all in this together! It will be fun, it will be crazy, and it will change the way you approach portraiture.
